Your Guide to Beach Etiquette in Ocean City
Don't Break the Unspoken Rules of the Ocean City, NJ Beach
As with any Ocean City, NJ beach, you should be sure that you practice good beach etiquette. Those who don't frequent the beach may not be aware that this etiquette exists. Committing a faux pas can quickly turn the rest of the beach against you. To ensure you're welcome on the sand, here are a few beach rules that you should follow.
1. Respect Everyone's Space
With as popular as Ocean City can be during the summer, you may worry that you won't have room. This might force you to park down your towel extremely close to another pair of beachgoers. Avoid this if you can. People on the beach want their privacy. You shouldn't park your things right within their area.
You'll also want to make sure that you're aware of the direction of the wind. When it comes to shaking off your towels, you don't want to unwittingly send sand in their eyes.
2. Bring a Good Attitude
Everyone goes to the beach to relax and have a good time. Bringing a bad attitude can impact everyone on the beach. Make sure you keep it in the car and bring a friendly attitude with you to the beach instead. Be kind towards those you're relaxing next to.
You should especially be kind towards lifeguards. They're there to make sure you and your family stay safe during your vacation.
3. Thank the Lifeguard Before You Leave
This is an old rule that doesn't get enough love. Lifeguards work tirelessly to ensure everyone is safe. While emergencies are rare, and it may seem like they're not doing much, you're going to be happy they're around when an emergency does occur. It's great beach etiquette to go up to them when you're leaving the beach and thank them for their service. A little gratitude can go a long way.
4. Clean Up After Yourself
Perhaps one of the most important beach etiquette rules to follow is to clean up after yourself. Leaving trash behind is problematic for several reasons such as the following:
- It's harmful for wildlife
- Encourages seagulls to remain in Ocean City instead of migrating
- Forces other people to clean up after you
- Water pollution
Leaving your trash in the sand and on the picnic tables can enable the local wildlife to get into it. This can kill them or spread pollution even further. It doesn't take long to clean up after yourself and there are waste bins everywhere.
